{"id":194,"date":"2017-02-13T20:25:28","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T04:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thekyo.me\/wordpress\/?p=194"},"modified":"2017-02-13T20:25:28","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T04:25:28","slug":"parents-parenthood-time-and-the-feels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thekyo.me\/test\/2017\/02\/13\/parents-parenthood-time-and-the-feels\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents, Parenthood, Time, and the Feels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BLUF:<\/strong> Thoughts on a quantified look at time with our loved ones. \u00a0Time is our most precious resource.<\/p>\n<p>I read this post from <a href=\"http:\/\/waitbutwhy.com\/2015\/12\/the-tail-end.html\">Wait, but Why<\/a> a while back, but find that I&#8217;m still sharing it with folks both in the context of being a new parent and appreciating the time with my kiddo as well as appreciating the time\u00a0I\u00a0have left with my\u00a0parents\/loved ones. \u00a0It just gives me the feels to see it\u00a0quantified\u00a0in Tim&#8217;s\u00a0blog post. \u00a0I won&#8217;t come close to doing the post justice so I highly suggest you click through and give it a read yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Read it? \u00a0Cool. \u00a0Here&#8217;s how thinking about the Tail End Principle has changed the way I view things.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>As a child:<\/strong> By dumb luck I already have some advantages with spending time with my parents in that we live in the same state and seeing them is just a 1 hour flight down to SoCal. \u00a0The post gave me a way to more accurately evaluate the cost-benefit of a weekend trip down with regards to cost of tickets, etc. \u00a0I not only have time left with my parents, but my grandmother is still around as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>As a parent:<\/strong>\u00a0I try to get home and spend time with my kiddo, P, during the work week. \u00a0Whether it&#8217;s spending mornings with him or evenings I aim for at least one session during the work week. \u00a0Two if I can squeeze it in. \u00a0He may not remember all the interactions, but I hope that some imprint will stay there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tail End Corollary:<\/strong> Having spent time thinking about Tail End Principle I came up with a corollary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Tail End Corollary: The time my child\u00a0has with my loved ones\u00a0has equal\/greater value than the time I have with them<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Assuming that I value time with my parents\/grandparents\/relatives\/loved ones. \u00a0The time P can spend with them must have equal or greater value. \u00a0The argument can be made that P won&#8217;t be able to remember said interactions if he&#8217;s too young. \u00a0But given that I have placed value in spending time with them, one can assume that the fact that they were able to interact with P also has intrinsic value to me. \u00a0So trips to visit now generate more value to me as a parent than they did when it was just me.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this post helps everyone take a step back and understand how to value the time they have left with their loved ones. \u00a0I doubt he&#8217;ll ever see\u00a0this, but I want to thank <a href=\"http:\/\/waitbutwhy.com\/\">Tim<\/a> for sharing his thoughts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BLUF: Thoughts on a quantified look at time with our loved ones. \u00a0Time is our most precious resource.
