Happy Mother’s Day 2019

Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms and parents out there who are everything to their kids.

To my mom who worked super hard to give us the best she could, never left us feeling like we were lacking, and who is still ready to help however she can, whenever she can.

Always willing to visit

To Carin’s mom who willingly helps watch over our kids so much of the time when she could be doing the #retiredlife.

Loves the kiddos

To my grandma who has always loved us unconditionally. She can never wait to see us again and is always asking for more pictures of the kids. Because of her age she DGAF and drops the truth bombs whenever she feels like it lol.

Grandma always there for me

Of course to Carin who shoulders both kids, a career, the household (I know we’re not 50/50 because you’re still the PjM, but I’m working on it), and still finds time to think about us. Thank you for building this life with me and giving me so many wonderful memories with the two clowns so far.

My life partner…

It just ain’t true

Slept like a baby

Whoever coined that must not have meant it in the literal sense unless they meant woke up hungry and covered in poop every few hours. If that was the case sorry…your true intent was lost to the winds of time.

And I’m back

After what was obviously a long hiatus I’m back.  Specifically playing around with some new tech and seeing how it all fits together.  Lots happened since the last post, but we’ll just slowly catch up on things.

Hi Dopey,

A year ago I said good-bye to you.  That day was much harder than I ever thought it was going to be.  I re-read my post to you and I can still remember how I felt.  The post doesn’t quite do justice to what I was trying to convey to you, but I hope you got it anyways.  I just wanted you to know that I’m remembering you today.

I think you would like to visit the office now.  There are a whole bunch of new dogs that you could have met.  Though I’m sure you would have said hello then wandered off to do something more interesting.  Mom and I both have pictures of you that we hold dear.  Anyways I hope you’re enjoying running around in Heaven.

Still miss and love you,

Dad

On the 30s so far

First off thanks to eveyrone that’s wished me a happy birthday today.  You’ve all played some part in my life and who I am today was partially due to your influence.  I’m glad to have met you all..or at least most of you =) even if it was even for a short period.

Now that I’m officially 1 year into my 30s I can easily say that it’s not all that different.  I mean there are some things that due change.  I think some parts of my body want to slow down a bit and stuff like staying healthy weighs a bit more on your mind, but I think all of that just comes down to being wiser.

I think I can also say that I’m not quite where I thought I’d be at this point, but I’m not sure it’s all bad.  When I think about the 31 years that have passed I think about people I’ve met and forgot, but mostly the friends that I’ve made along the way.  I think the 30s is where you really start to see the divergence in people’s lives.  In the 20s some people got married and some even had a kid.  I think it’s the 30s where you really start to see the spread in life experiences.  There’re single folk like me, people who are just getting married, people on their first kid, people on their 2nd(!) kid.  It’s amazing to look around at my friends and see where they are in their lives.  Some people end up where you think they’d end up and as always time has a way of changing people so there are some people that surprise you.  I feel lucky to share their joys and sorrows, if at least vicariously.

I think for me 30s was the point when I realized that experiences and relationships are what I want to build up.  Last year I was able to experience and do a bunch of amazing things like The Relay and Tough Mudder.  These are things I don’t think I would have ever imagined myself doing in the past, but with the right people I was able to take advantage of the opportunities.  I recently ran a 10k with some other coworkers and the interesting thing was the stronger runners were in the 30s category for this race.  We also noticed 30s is the age when marathoning and triathloning seems to become much more popular.  If anything I’m probably healthier now than I was in my 20s.

So all in all I guess my conclusion is I’m looking forward to the new experiences and people that lie in my future!  Bring on the rest of the 30s!  40s….you can stay over there =)

2012 Goals January Update

Already behind on the goals posting!  January was not a particularly spectacular month goal-wise.  There was quite a bit going on with regards to work as well as having Chinese New Year’s land in January instead of February this year.  With that said social activities during the month were higher than usual.  Let’s check the numbers!

Diet:
Average at best.  Must be more active in application of rules.

Sleep:
Averaged 6.15 hours.  About par with last year’s norm.

Workout:
13/31 Not great but just passing standards.

Stretch:
9/31 Stretched about 70% of the time after a workout.  Needs improvement.

Body:
Not much change in this area.

Social:
18/31 High numbers due to a lot of work sports, higher than usual weekend activities with friends, and the visit home for CNY.

One Off Goals Completed:
Yearly Phyiscal
Read Hunger Games Trilogy

Welcome to 2012

2011 has come and gone…looking back it was a very interesting year with some new experiences.  I had some good friends living with me and we had some adventures.

Work was busier than ever, but I was able to do some cool things like The Relay and Tough Mudder thanks to coworkers.

Made a trip out to Chicago and got to try Alinea and Next.

A good friend got married and I got to be his best man.

With good there’s always the downside as well.  Dopey passed away this past year.  I still miss her dearly.

On to this year’s goals!  I’ve left some One off Goals open for any good suggestions friends might have.

Diet:

Paleo/Primal has been working out pretty well for me so I thik I’m going to continue with them.

To add structure that makes sense for me I think I’ll be sticking to the diet except when on vacation, eating out, or when there’s sushi at work =)

Sleep:

I’m not changing anything here.  They worked out pretty well.

On a regular sleep cycle get at least 6 hrs a day…or at least 6 hours average.

(Stretch Goal) Polyphasic sleep

(Uber Stretch Goal) Uberman Sleep Cycle

Workout:

Same Goals!

3 times a week (Any physical activity counts lifting, running, cycling, sports, etc)

Body:

Current level is about 13%.  Goal is to lose 1% off that.

(Stretch) Lose 2%

Stretch:

Stretch 3 times a week.

Social:

I think the goals from last year were also fine to keep.

2 Social Activities a Week

Image:

Keep my hair in check (haircuts, wild mornign hair, etc)

(Stretch) Continue with wardrobe update.  Specifically shoes this time.

One off Goals:

Yearly Physical Exam

6 Events this year (Races, etc)

Swimming Lessons

12 New Books Read

1 Outdoor Adventure (Snow Camping, Half Dome Hike, etc)

Friend Suggestion Slots

(Bonus) Work on a language

(Bonus) Work on an instrument

2011 Goals Retrospective

Chart_1

I graphed out the numbers that I found interesting over the past year.

If you look at the graph there are dips in June then a downward trend Sep on.  They can be explained via the pulled hamstring in June.  Sep on was due to the constant work/personal events that all clustered around that timeframe this year.

Diet:

Actually was more structured earlier in the year.  It became more of a fuzzy guideline as the year went on.  Overall I think I’ve stuck pretty well to the Paleo.  Diet suffers the most when I’m not working or out of town.

I think a bit more structure is required for me to reach my bodyfat goals.  I will have to put in exceptions for eating out.

Sleep:

7/12 Months averaged over 6 hours, but even in the months that dipped under they only went under slightly (lowest at 5.73 hrs)

Workout:

3 times a week. ~12 times a month.  Met this goal 9/12 Months.

Most of the time I was able to meet this goal fairly easily.  I was actually able to push into the 20+ times a month about half the time.  The times I missed were only off by 2 or 3 workouts.

Body:

Goal of 3% or 12% (This was actually the same given my starting was 15%).  Rounded off the year around 13%.  Not exactly what I would have liked, but I think to make additional inroads here I might have to be stricter than I’d like. I believe that 1-2% at this point will be fairly difficult, but we’ll see.

Stretch:

5 mins a day was a bit ambitious.

Not once did I actually hit this goal.  I think next year’s goal should be to stretch with every workout or 3 times a week (greater of the two).

Social:

I did not eat upstairs more.  However I did seem to meet the 2 times a week goal.  Basketball actually ended up consisting of a large portion of the counts.  I would have struggled a lot more if I didn’t count basketball as a social activity.

Image:

I definitely was doing a much better job at this earlier in the year.  And I started bumming out in prep work as the year went on.

Ironically the stretch and really stretch goals I think were at least partially met.

I did get haircuts at more reasonable intervals and happened to update my wardrobe twice this year.

2011 Goals December Update

This will be the last update of 2011!  I’m feeling like the last 2 months of the year are undoing the work I put into the first 10 months =)

I’ll post a retrospective of the last year and plan the coming year’s goals shortly.

Diet:
Diet was actually not that bad this month.  It of course suffered when I was down south.  At least there was a healthy piece to XMas dinner with the more or less carbless sides I made =)

Sleep:
Average Sleep for December: 5.73 hours.

Workout:
Got 10 of 31.  Pretty low overall.  I did not do any workouts during my vacation down south either.  I’m probably going to be pretty sore when I start back up more regularly.

Body:
Looking at about 13% this month.  A little bit higher, but not horribly too worrisome yet.

Stretch:
5 times this month.  Along with the working out the stretching has declined.

Social:
19 times this month.  Another holiday month means more time with friends and family.  I saw and spent some good times with people down south as well as up north.

Image:
Got a haircut and actually did a bit of post XMas shopping.  Rounded out my wardrobe with some nicer shirts that I’ll likely rarely wear, but it’s nice to have options.
